Dalai Llama is with us to guard the sheep and is very serious about his job. He is so elegant and quite a card! He will not come into the barn at night to go to bed and eat dinner until all the sheep are safely in their pens. We adore him! Dalai always has a wonderful fleece happily kicks up his heels, sunning plenty and just being a happy llama! He spends lots of time with his sheep and soaking his toes in the sheep tank when he is hot!
It is so amazing to watch our livestock guard animals work. They are so intent on keeping them safe. And each has their own job. Dalai has the help of our Great Pyrenees Bobbi and our Great Pyrenees/Kuvasz Bear too.
When a 'bad guy' comes around or something is not quite right, Dalai has a certain call that brings EVERY sheep to Dalai, where they stand in a circle til he lets them go. Bobbi puts herself between the flock and the 'danger' while Bear goes streaking out to see what the threat might be. They are amazing. Our sheep are lucky to be so well protected!
2018 Updates:
Dalai is 17 years old now! Wowser! I'm glad Llamas live good long lives. Usually around 25 years. He is such an elegant fellow. EXCEPT on shearing day it seems. He used to love having his haircut. He would lay down next to the shearing mat and wait his turn. This year? Not so much. We had to put a spit sock on his nose. He looked like an elephant. Not very attractive Dalai. Oh, and you missed us all with your spit fit!
Here he is, watching over his sheep and farm. Love your Dalai Llama so much!
